  Dear IEJEE Reader,
  We are very proud of being able to present this special issue of International Electronic Journal of Elementary Education. It’s devoted to Contemporary Irish Education.
  As special issue editors, Professor Kathy HALL and Dr. Mary HORGAN did a great job. They invited ten scholars to address several important issues in contemporary Irish Education.
  Their contributions in this special issue will make it easy for international scholars to get reliable information and scholarly presented perspectives on contemporary Irish Education.
  I want to express my deep gratitude to Professor Kathy HALL and Dr. Mary HORGAN for their collaboration and contribution. I also want to thank all the authors for their papers. I knew that I would learn more about the Irish Education, but having done it through their informative papers gave me a special feeling and pleasure. I hope all the readers of this special issue will have a similar experience.

  We are excited by presenting you a new issue of International Electronic Journal of Elementary Education (IEJEE). On behalf of our editorial board, as an Editor-in-Chief, I would like to share a message I received from one of our researchers who published a paper in IEJEE. His paper was downloaded by 64 persons within a week. We also noticed that IEJEE is reaching more and more researchers, teachers, students and policy makers, particularly after being indexed in ERIC - Education Resources Information Center, USA.

  Dear IEJEE readers, We, the board of IEJEE, are enthusiastic about publishing a new issue. This enthusiasm has been the same from the first issue. We are not only learning about the scientific knowledge, methods and applications from different kind of countries, but about publishing academic journal. We know that the learning process and the enthusiasm will continue with every issue. Publishing a journal is not just limited to routine work or reviewing/publishing of an article. For instance, IEJEE provides a platform for international collaboration along with being an international journal. This platform leads the readers and the authors of IEJEE to work together in a project or for an article. Therefore, IEJEE plays an inspirational role to improve interdisciplinary and international academic works. This work generally take place in our special issues.

  International Electronic Journal of Elementary Education (IEJEE) offers you a new issue with eleven articles. Twenty three researchers from different research institutions address and explore different educational issues. It is IEJEE’s first time that it comes out with a so expanded issue, a new face and advanced technological solutions, but also with a new policy. There are several factors that caused for this expansion and other changes at IEJEE.

  Dear IEJEE Readers,
  It’s a great pleasure for us, as IEJEE family, to present the latest issue of International
  Electronic Journal of Elementary Education. This excitement started 6 years ago in
  2008. From that year on, we’ve published 17 issues with our precious editor Kamil
  Özerk and editorial team. These publications were generally on elementary art,
  language development, maths, science, social studies, computer, social development
  and educational psychology. In this period four special issues, each of which made an
  overwhelming impression, were published.

  It’s a great pleasure for me to present you one of the most comprehensive issues of
  International Electronic Journal of Elementary Education; Volume 6, Issue 2.
  In eleven papers, eighteen scholars are addressing and exploring important
  educational topics like academic self-concept, developing reading skills among children
  with reading difficulties, theory of mind, self-concept, gender-role orientation, student’s
  perspective on leadership, children’s enjoyment, interest, and comprehension of
  graphic novels compared to heavily-illustrated and traditional novels, the role of nonchallenging
  education and teacher control as factors for marginalization of students in
  diverse settings, teachers’ thinking styles and their attitutes to teaching, mathematic
  teacher candidates’ problem solving skills, a comparative study of education of
  linguistic minority students in Los Angeles and Oslo, the role of drawings in evoking
  interest for a carrier as math teacher and underrepresentation of male in teacher
  education.

  IEJEE Special Issue Multilingual Policies and Multilingual Education in the Nordic Countries

  Vol. 6 No. 1 (2013)

  This is the fifth special issue of International Electronic Journal of Elementary
  Education since 2008. This volume is devoted to Multilingualism and Multilingual
  Education in the Nordic Countries which is also the title of the issue. In 2011, Dr. Siv
  Björklund from University of Vaasa, Finland, launched the idea of initiating a
  comparative research project aiming at establishing a network of Nordic researchers
  with the view of informing each other about what is going on within the field of
  multilingualism and multilingual education in the four Nordic countries, Finland,
  Sweden, Denmark and Norway. Five other active researchers from these countries
  responded positively to her idea and the Network for Researchers of Multilingualism
  and Multilingual Education (RoMME) was established. Dr. Siv Björklund was chosen to
  be the project manager. RoMME applied and received funding for a three-year-project
  (2011-2013) from NordForsk, an organization which under the auspices of the Nordic
  Council of Ministers provides funding for Nordic research cooperation.

  This special issue of the International Electronic Journal of Elementary Education (IEJEE) is devoted to one of the most current and important educational topics of our time: Learning and Instruction in the Natural Sciences (K-10 focus). Drs. Florencia K. Anggoro and Benjamin D. Jee of the College of the Holy Cross, USA, have done a great job as special issue editors. I am very grateful for the scientific editorialship they have accomplished as two active scholars in their field.

  Dear Readers,
  This is the third special issue of International Electronic Journal of Elementary Education (IEJEE).
  The main topic is Reading Comprehension, one of the important skills that the students in the
  schools of any knowledge society must command. To be able to do that the students at
  every grade in the school must be provided educational conditions. This necessitates
  teachers who pursue their job in accordance with research based knowledge and
  pedagogical ideas. It’s the scientific circles’ duty to deliver a such knowledge and ideas as a
  condition for the teachers’ professional development.
  Our conception of reading in general and reading comprehension in particular has
  improved by the enormous reading research activities during the last decades. Therefore it
  was a right decision by IEJEE to focus on this important topic.

  the editors of that special issue: Dr. Annemie Desoete and Dr. Gokhan
  Ozsoy.
  The world of researchers is provided more opportunities to
  communicate with their colleagues, practicing educationists, and decision
  makers now than it was the case for a decade ago. Thanks to ICT. I am, as
  an Editor in chief of IEJEE, considering peer-reviewed scientific publishing
  through electronic channels as a contemporary way of dissemination of
  research based knowledge.

  Dear Readers,
  International Electronic Journal of Elementary Education (IEJEE)
  devoted this special issue for an important topic: Metacognition. The
  comprehensive research within the area of cognitive science during the last
  three decades revealed that not only cognition, but cognition about
  cognition, in other words thinking about our own thinking processes is
  important. We can not avoid this cognitive process for development of self
  regulation, reflection, working memory, attention, planning, organising,
  execution and monitoring. Metacognition is also related to learning
  strategies and learning. Metacognition is like a fresh air. It is invisible, but
  we know that it exists and it is important for us. Those of us who have been
  working with teaching-learning issues in ordinary schools and with children
  or adults with special needs due to i.e. dyscalculia, dyslexia and
  ADHD/ADD, we have been experienced the importance of metacognition for
  their academic learning and developing of basic skills like reading or
  reading comprehension.

  Dear IEJEE reader,
  You are holding the third issue of volume one of International
  Electronic Journal of Elementary Education (IEJEE), one of the youngest
  and most exciting electronic journals focusing on the contemporary issues in
  elementary education. Approximately one tenth of today’s world population
  has one or another way relationship with elementary education. Different
  socio-cultural issues, tough economic challenges and changing policies
  around the world affect the educational conditions for elementary students.
  Different countries and geographic areas steady are facing different
  challenges with regard to their teaching-learning agendas. On the other
  hand we are observing a common global interest: All the central and local
  educational authorities want to create better teaching conditions for
  elementary teachers and better learning conditions for the elementary
  students. Another global interest is to have access to research-based
  knowledge which has high quality and at the same time is relevant. I
  believe that IEJEE is fulfilling an important mission with that regard. I owe
  many thanks to all the researchers who have made their contributions to
  the previous issues and this third issue of IEJEE. Publishing an
  international scientific journal is a demanding job. Without our editorial
  board members and guest reviewers, it would be impossible to come so long
  in our work.

  Dear Reader,
  International Electronic Journal of Elementary Education (IEJEE) is one of the
  youngest scientific journals in the field of education. This is Nr. 2 of the Vol. 1. We are
  pleased and been proud of the positive feedbacks that we received for the Nr. 1 from our
  readers in 2008.
  We are encouraged. We realized that we are accomplishing an important work by
  devoting International Electronic Journal of Elementary Education (IEJEE) for the
  challenging and contemporary issues in elementary education in different countries in
  our time.
  IEJEE has received overwhelming attention by the international community of
  researchers. Researchers from Canada to South Korea and from Nigeria to USA and
  many from the broader Europe have submitted their papers.
  I don’t know whether any other new scientific journal has received so much
  attention at its first issue as IEJEE has done. We realized that we had to expand our
  circle of editorial board members and reviewers to conduct scientific and ethical
  defendable reviews within an acceptable time limit. We have so long worked hard and
  will be working harder in the period ahead.

  It’s a great pleasure for me to introduce you the Vol. 1, Nr 1 of International Electronic Journal of Elementary Education (IEJEE). Elementary education is an important part of the lives of every generation. It therefore deserves a special attention by researchers, policy makers, teachers and parents.There are many, and sometimes, different topics and challenges related to Elementary Education in different contexts and countries. At the same time the community of national educational researchers in every country and international researcher circles have access to an increasing amount of research based knowledge. We do more research and know more in our days than ever before about several aspects of elementary education.
